After eight years of construction, Nam Ly Bridge in Thu Duc City, a district-level unit under Ho Chi Minh City, was opened to traffic on Wednesday morning, exciting residents and commuters.
The Transportation Works Construction Investment Project Management Authority of Ho Chi Minh City worked with the Thu Duc People’s Committee and the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport to organize an opening ceremony for the first phase of the Nam Ly Bridge at 7:00 am.
The bridge was built to replace the degraded Rach Chiec Bridge.
Crowds of residents attended the ceremony, expecting the new bridge to help ease traffic congestion facing Do Xuan Hop Street.
Speaking at the ceremony, Le Ngoc Hung, deputy director of the authority, said that the bridge is one of the city’s key transport projects in 2024.
After the opening, the bridge will facilitate residents’ commute and boost socio-economic growth in Thu Duc City and Ho Chi Minh City alike.
The Nam Ly Bridge, in combination with Do Xuan Hop Street, forms a main route running across An Phu, Binh Trung Tay, Phuoc Long A, Phuoc Long B, and Phuoc Binh Wards.

Work started on the bridge project, which carried a price tag of over VND731.7 billion (US$29.8 million), on October 8, 2016.
After completing 40 percent of its workload, including some spans, a drainage system, and a partial bypass, the project was suspended in April 2019 due to obstacles over site clearance.
"The site clearance and compensation processes were completed in April 2023, thanks to guidance from Thu Duc authorities and departments, as well as the cooperation of local residents," he said.
Hung confirmed that the remaining components of the project would be completed in December this year.
Hoang Thi Van, a resident near the Nam Ly Bridge, said that the area surrounding the bridge project has faced traffic jams over the past several years, making life harder for commuters.
“We have been looking forward to the opening of the Nam Ly Bridge for eight years,” she said.
