A woman from Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province in southern Vietnam has died of rabies six months after being scratched by her pet cat, with PCR test results confirming the infection.

The 53-year-old victim, identified as V.T.T.D., was scratched on her leg by her cat on May 25.

She suffered minor bleeding from the scratch but did not seek a rabies vaccination, according to the Medical Center of Ba Ria City, which is the provincial capital.

On November 20, she developed a fever, sore throat, and fatigue.

Three days later, she was admitted to Ba Ria Hospital.

By November 24, her family transferred her to Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, where doctors diagnosed her with severe metabolic acidosis -- a condition marked by excessive acid in the body fluids -- and suspected rabies.

She was then taken to the Ho Chi Minh City Hospital for Tropical Diseases, where doctors confirmed her rabies diagnosis.

On November 25, she was moved back to Ba Ria Hospital and passed away the same morning.

Her PCR test results released by the Hospital for Tropical Diseases confirmed the presence of the rabies virus.

Her family disclosed that the cat that scratched her had recently given birth and was exhibiting unusually aggressive behavior.

They also said that the cat had never been vaccinated against rabies.
