Team Vietnam emerged victorious in the men’s category at the 10th Southeast Asian table tennis tournament in Indonesia, according to a local sports official.
The Vietnamese men defeated their Singaporean opponents in Makassar to the claim the title on Wednesday, Phan Anh Tuan, head of the table tennis division at the Vietnam Sports Administration, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper the same day.
This is an unexpected result, Tuan said.
The Vietnamese men’s team, coached by Nguyen Nam Hai from Hanoi, includes Dinh Quang Linh, Doan Ba Tuan Anh, Nguyen Anh Tu, and Nguyen Duc Tuan.
Tuan said that five teams competed in the men’s category, including Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore.
The Vietnamese won 3-1 against the first three rival teams before beating Singapore 3-2 to claim the championship.
The victory is considered Vietnam’s best table tennis achievement in international competitions over the past few years.
The 10th Southeast Asian table tennis tournament, taking place from December 21 to 24, is Vietnam’s last table tennis contest in 2016,
Vietnam also sent a women’s team, consisting of Mai Hoang My Trang, Nguyen Thi Nga, and Nguyen Thi Viet Linh, though no major victories have been announced.
