Many racers were injured in an accident as they were about to cross the finish line in the fifth stage of the 2022 Ho Chi Minh City TV (HTV) Cup tournament in northern Vietnam on Saturday.

The 110-kilometer stage started in northern Hai Phong City and ended in Hanoi.

As the distance was short and the roads were mostly flat, the cyclists did not hesitate to pull off their attacks right from the start, including Iogr Frolov of Ho Chi Minh City-Vinama – the holder of the prestigious yellow jersey.

The offensive play styles of the teams resulted in a breathtaking high-speed race.

Just about 300 meters from the finish line, an accident occurred, causing many racers to fall and get injured.

Frolov, Nguyen Tan Hoai of Loc Troi Group, holder of the blue jersey, and Nguyen Van Binh of Ho Chi Minh City-NewGroup, holder of the white jersey, were among the injured.

The yellow jersey is worn by the rider leading the general classification. The blue jersey is given to the rider claiming the points category. The white jersey is awarded to the best young rider.

Most of the cyclists caught in the accident were still able to finish the race.

Hoai was taken to the hospital and needed two stiches on his forehead, according to his coach Le Thanh Liem.

Meanwhile, Frolov suffered scratches across his body.

The sixth stage of the tournament was scheduled to take place at Hoan Kiem Lake in Hanoi on Sunday.
