Vietnam will meet Laos at the Laos National Stadium for their first match at the 2022 AFF Championship at 7:30 pm on Wednesday.
The Vietnamese squad also faced Laos in the opening match in the 2018 edition of the tournament and then went on to win the championship that year.
The team, whose average age is 26 and is the fourth-oldest at this year’s tourney, with no players under 23 years old, is hoping for a similar result.
Meanwhile, Laos bring the youngest squad, averaging just 22 years old.
The 2022 AFF Championship is taking place in ten Southeast Asian host cities from December 20 to January 16, 2023.
Vietnam are placed into Group B, with games against Malaysia, Singapore, Myanmar, and Laos.
Following their match with Laos, Vietnam will meet Malaysia on December 27, Singapore on December 30, and Myanmar on January 3, 2023.
The previous edition of the tournament, which was originally scheduled for late 2020 but was pushed back until late 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, saw Vietnam, the then-defending champions, eliminated in the semifinals by Thailand, who later won the trophy after thrashing Indonesia 6-2 in the two-legged final.
The 2021 tournament was hosted by Singapore in a centralized venue, instead of the traditional decentralized format.
