Nearly 2,000 triathletes from 47 countries and territories competed in the triathlon race BIM Group Ironman 70.3, which lasts until Sunday, on Phu Quoc Island off Kien Giang Province in southern Vietnam, contributing to promoting the island city’s tourism.
Tran Nguyen Ba, deputy director of the Kien Giang Department of Culture and Sports, said on Friday that this was the first world-class sporting event held in Phu Quoc City.
It has helped introduce Phu Quoc’s landscapes, culture, and people to domestic and foreign visitors.
“Sports tourism has become a global trend, so we will propose the provincial People’s Committee organize more sporting events and turn them into annual occasions so that local and international tourists will come to Phu Quoc and explore the landscapes here,” Ba added.

Athletes competed in a 2km swim in the sea, a 90km bike ride, and a 21.1km run.
“Wonderful Phu Quoc was my first feeling when I set foot here. The sea, mountains, and forests are all stunning and impressive," said Mark Allen, a six-time Ironman world champion.
“I will try to conquer a high prize [in the race].”
He added that he would tell his friends about Phu Quoc as an ideal tourism destination in Vietnam.
