French Ambassador to Vietnam Olivier Brochet on Monday afternoon met with Vietnamese weightlifting athlete Le Van Cong, who secured a bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympics in France earlier this month.

The French ambassador applauded Cong for his efforts at the Games, presenting him with a traditional congratulatory letter which honors athletes with outstanding achievements.

Brochet hoped Cong would obtain further achievements at the 2028 Los Angeles Paralympics.

He thanked Cong for spreading beautiful images, keeping the spirit of constant improvement, and bolstering confidence among the public.

The ambassador wished for Vietnam and France to have future sports cooperation plans.

He said that the Paris 2024 Paralympics was France’s success and helped spread the desire to compete among international disabled athletes.

Olivier affirmed that he would send cooperation proposals to the Vietnamese Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism in the near future.

Pham Thanh Tu, director of the National Sports Training Center in Ho Chi Minh City, informed that Cong, 40, is the first Vietnamese athlete to win medals in three consecutive Paralympic Games, including a gold medal in the Rio 2016 Paralympics, a silver medal in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, and this year's bronze.

Tu also thanked the French ambassador for his support for Vietnam's athletes, saying Brochet's visit to the training center encouraged its coaches and athletes to contribute to the country's athletic cooperation.

The Paris 2024 Paralympics, held from August 28 to September 8, featured 549 events for athletes with disabilities.

The Vietnamese delegation for the Games included 14 members: four officers, three coaches, and seven athletes.

The athletes were all notably from Ho Chi Minh City, including Pham Nguyen Khanh Minh in athletics, Do Thanh Hai and Le Tien Dat in swimming, and Le Van Cong, Nguyen Binh An, Dang Thi Linh Phuong, and Chau Hoang Tuyet Loan in weightlifting.

Le Van Cong was Vietnam's only athlete to win a medal at the Games.
