Ride-hailing and food and goods delivery company Gojek will cease operations in Vietnam from September 16 as part of the business strategy of its parent company GoTo, headquartered in Indonesia, a representative of the firm told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Wednesday.

“The strategic plan is meant to allow the firm to focus on several activities that help enhance market sustainability and are suitable to GoTo’s commitments to achieving long-term sustainable business growth,” the representative elaborated.

The Gojek representative also expressed gratitude to Gojek’s staff, customers, partner drivers, and partner restaurants, emphasizing that they were a key part of its business operations in Vietnam.

“We will offer necessary support to all affected individuals and organizations during the withdrawal period, while complying with all prevailing regulations,” the representative added.

Gojek’s exit from Vietnam highlights the intense competition in the ride-hailing sector and mirrors a growing trend in the tech industry where firms increasingly reassess their market presence to optimize growth.

Similarly, e-commerce firm Shopee has already pulled out of Europe and Latin America, except for Brazil.

Established in 2010 in Indonesia, Gojek initially operated as a call center to connect consumers to courier delivery and two-wheeled ride-hailing services.

Gojek launched its application in 2015 with only four services: GoRide, GoSend, GoShop, and GoFood.

It later expanded its operations to offer several additional services and broaden its reach in Vietnam and Singapore.
