The Vietnamese team has outstandingly surpassed its rivals to win the first prize at the Huawei Asia Pacific Seeds for the Future Tech4Good Competition recently held in Shenzen, China, advancing to the Tech4Good Global Competition in 2025.

With its SkyNet project focusing on facilitating search and rescue of flood victims, the team was honored at the annual competition organized from September 24 to 27 by China-based Huawei, a global provider of information and communications technology solutions, attracting 25 teams from 25 countries, including Vietnam, in the Asia-Pacific region.

The team comprised six students from four leading universities in Vietnam, including Mai Thi Phuong, Nguyen Thi Thu Trang, and Dinh Hoang Anh from the Posts and Telecommunications Institute of Technology; Pham Quynh Trang from VinUniversity; Cao Sy Duong from the Hanoi University of Science and Technology; and Tran Dang Nam from the Ho Chi Minh City University of Transport.

Before being qualified for this competition, the Vietnamese team had to pass two rounds of the Seeds for the Future program.

The team’s SkyNet project was devised in the context of the devastating super typhoon Yagi hitting Vietnam last month and causing economic damage of nearly US$3.3 billion to the country.

The project leverages drones, synthetic aperture radar (SAR), and artificial intelligence (AI) technology to deliver high-resolution imaging, ensure stable data transmission, and enable real-time reporting.

This innovative approach aims to enhance the speed, intelligence, and effectiveness of search and rescue operations for victims in flooded areas.

Notably, the team optimized the cost of the project to ensure its high economic efficiency when it is put into operation.

With this achievement at the regional competition, the team will advance to the Tech4Good Global Competition in 2025, along with receiving startup funding from Huawei, enjoying an experience trip to China, and joining 1:1 discussion sessions with the tech company's leaders.

As a startup project competition, Tech4Good aims to raise students' awareness of challenges to sustainable development, encourage students to use the ICT skills they learn to explore solutions that are both technically and commercially viable, and help them turn their dreams into reality, Huawei said on its website.
