A photo exhibit which features Dong Ba Market, the largest market and also a tourist destination in central Vietnam’s Thua Thien- Hue Province, through different periods is running until August 25.
The exhibit, “Cho Dong Ba Xua va Nay” (Dong Ba Market then and now), is ongoing at the market (13 Tran Hung Dao), which is located on one of the Huong River’s banks and to the southwest of the Hue Royal Palace.
The exhibit, which marks the market’s 115th anniversary, showcases over 90 photos of the market in its most memorable moments, including rare ones taken in the early 20th century.
The market is also a favorite destination among local and international tourists.
According to historical records, King Dong Khanh, the 9th king of Nguyen Dynasty (1802-1945), the country’s last monarchy, built Dong Ba Market in 1877.
In 1899, King Thanh Thai- King Dong Khanh’s successor, moved the market to the current site.
After 1975, the market was restored and expanded to the current scale.
The market currently has more than 2,500 stalls and receives some 5,000-7,000 visits a day and up to 10,000-12,000 visits during holidays and Tet (Lunar New Year.)
