Palm trees have always been a common sight in the southern Vietnamese province of An Giang, and lately they have become an important source of inspiration for hundreds of photographers hoping to capture their beauty in the throes of the flood season.

Asian palmyra palms are so ubiquitous and important to the local way of life in the province’s Bay Nui (Seven Mountains) area that they have become its unofficial symbol.

Each year, as the rainy season causes the Mekong River to overflow from September to November, rice paddies are transformed into vast expanses of water that sparkle in the breeze.

Palmyra palms towering 30 meters above the flood pools make for an incomparable illustration of the region's natural beauty.

Behind a local pagoda are “twin palms” and a row of palms whose grandeur has left a strong impression on photographers.

They call it the ‘legendary palm line’ as an ode to the many awards it has won for various photographers at photo competitions.

Visitors to the area can spot fishermen casting nets onto inundated rice fields and men climbing up palmyra palms to pluck fruits and collect sugary sap from tapped top shoots.

The sap can be consumed as a drink or used as an ingredient in several local delicacies.

An Giang also boasts other tourist attractions, like the Long Xuyen floating market, Ba Chua Xu Temple, Co To Mountain, and a forest of melaleuca – a type of tree that grows widely in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta region.
