The UK is eager to step up cooperation with Vietnam in agriculture and the conservation of rare wildlife species, among other areas, Lord De Mauley, visiting UK Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, said in Hanoi on Monday. The British official made the statement at a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai. The guest appreciated the host country’s role and initiative in preserving wildlife and fighting the illegal trade in wild animals, and voiced his hope for continued support and cooperation between the two countries in this field. The UK official also told his host that his government provides about VND70 billion (US$3.3 million) a year to assist Vietnam in scientific and technological development.

He also asked Vietnam to help boost the penetration of British goods into the Vietnamese market.

For his part, Deputy PM Hai assured his guest that the Vietnamese government is improving the local investment environment to support foreign investors, including those from the UK, in doing business in Vietnam.

Hai also said Vietnam wishes to enhance cooperation with the UK in science, technology, education, and training.

He suggested that Lord De Mauley support Vietnam in getting ODA for its scientific research, green technology development, and response to climate change.
