Authorities in the central city of Da Nang Wednesday issued a decision to expel two Chinese men for disguising as monks to illegally beg for alms in the city. On August 27, Peng Yurui and He Dechao, both 60, were caught by police in Hai Chau District’s Thach Trang Ward begging for alms in monk costumes. Street beggars are prohibited in this city. The imposters had managed to receive VND1.6 million (US$66) before being invited to the police station where they confessed to arriving in Da Nang to “study the market for trading in Buddhist-related products.” The Chinese had to beg for alms because they ran out of money, they told police. The city’s immigration department (PA72) imposed administrative fines ranging between VND10 and 20 million on the disguised monks but the violators said they could not pay due to financial problems. Earlier, PA72 had expeled two other Chinese nationals, Li Muzi, 28 and Xu XaianDe, 27, for illegal tourism activities.
