Politics -- Officials of the Vietnamese and Laotian governments on Wednesday conducted a ceremony to inaugurate the La Lay Border Gate, a new international border gate between the two countries in A Ngo Commune, Dakrong District of the central Vietnamese province of Quang Tri.Society -- Chinese vessels that are guarding China’s illegal oil rig Haiyang Shiyou 981 on Wednesday continued their attempts to ram or fire water cannons at Vietnamese ships whenever possible.  Up to 123 Chinese ships, including six military boats, were deployed in three rounds around the rig yesterday to prevent Vietnamese vessels from approaching the platform. Meanwhile, about 40 Chinese fishing boats approached local fishing vessels, scaring them away from their fishing ground near the rig. -- Two mining workers have been reported missing after a quarry where they had worked in Tan Son District, Phu Tho Province, collapsed on Wednesday. Rescuers have been trying to search for the victims under the debris. -- As dog thefts have recently become common in Vietnam, many people, including ordinary citizens, veterinary doctors, lawyers, and governmental officials, have suggested including dog thievery in the Penal Code so that official and strict punishment can be applied to the thieves.  -- The bodies of three people who drowned while bathing off a beach in Ba Kiem Cap in southern Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province on Tuesday were found yesterday. The dead victims included two young men, aged 19 and 20, and a 17-year-old girl. -- More than 15 days after being transplanted with a synthetic prosthetic device (Heartware) into his heart, Hoang Quoc Bien, a 39-year-old man of central Quang Binh Provincve, has recovered totally, said heart specialists who performed the five-hour transplant at Hue Central Hospital on June 6, with the support of a leading expert from Saint Vincent Hospital, Australia.Business -- Transport Minister Dinh La Thang has extended his apologies to the passengers of a VietJet Air flight who were mistakenly transported to a wrong destination on June 19. These passengers were carried from Hanoi to Cam Ranh along the central coast, instead of Da Lat in the Central Highlands.  Lifestyle

-- The East Vietnam Sea will be the theme of the “Flower Street” and the “Book Street”, the cultural events that are organized annually in downtown Ho Chi Minh City during Tet (Lunar New Year), the city authorities have said. This year will see the “Flower Street” event to be held on Ham Nghi Street in District 1, instead of Nguyen Hue Street as in previous years.Sports

-- The two last matches of Groups G and H of the 2014 FIFA World Cup will take place on Thursday and Friday to determine the last qualified candidates for the round of 16. Accordingly, the U.S. soccer squad will face their German rivals at 11:00 pm tonight while Belgium will compete with South Korea at 3:00 am on June 27 (Vietnam time).
