A man from Hanoi has been given capital punishment for shooting dead a hotel receptionist and injuring two other people in 2016.

The Hanoi People’s Court announced its decision to sentence Nguyen Vinh Long, a.k.a. Long ‘Ghost,’ following a two-day trial on Wednesday.

Long, 39, was convicted of murder, illegal possession of weapons, and obstruction.

The jury considered the case as especially serious and the defendant’s actions as dangerous to society.

According the case file, Long received a phone call from his subordinate, who said he needed help on Nguyen Thi Dinh Street in Cau Giay District on the morning of October 27, 2016.

Long and several other gang members, all armed with guns and machetes, quickly traveled to the scene to deal with the problem.

They spotted Vu Van Hai, 28, who was waiting for his girlfriend on the side of the road, and thought he was their enemy.

Long opened fire on Hai but the latter managed to run away on his motorbike.

The gang chased the victims down to the nearby Nam Cuong 2 Hotel, when Long started shooting at the reception desk and killed Luong Van Luyen, the hotel employee.

Hai and another victim were also wounded in the attack.

Long was already a wanted suspect for a different crime at the time of the incident.

On the night of April 30, 2016, Long and his friends were drinking at a bar in Hoan Kiem District.

Early the next morning, when employees asked the group to leave the venue as the bar was closing, Long threatened the employee with his gun and began shooting at a flight of stairs inside the venue.

After exiting the bar, Long’s group was approached by several officers patrolling the neighborhood.

Long pulled out his gun and shot twice at the ground near the officers before escaping.

During the trial, eight of Long’s gang members were also convicted and handed sentences ranging from 18 months to life in prison.
