Two South Korean men have been apprehended for allegedly stealing VND150 million (US$6,450) from a local tour guide in the central Vietnamese city of Da Nang before spending all of the money on gambling at a local casino.
Officers in Hai Chau District confirmed on Monday they had arrested Kim Kwang Seung and Seo Kyoung Won, both South Korean nationals, and transferred them to the municipal police department for further investigation.
Preliminary information showed that the two foreigners had stolen the money from L.Tr.T.H., a Vietnamese tour guide who resides in the central city, at a hotel on Nguyen Van Linh Street on March 1.
At around 7:20 pm that day, H. and his group of tourists returned to the hotel after their tour.
The guide had been resting in the lobby for a while, before going outside to talk with his friend for a few moments, leaving behind his backpack that contained VND150 million ($6,450) in cash.
H. later returned to the hotel lobby only to find the backpack had disappeared.
The case was reported to Hai Chau District police, who were able to identify the suspects and capture them the following afternoon.
At the police station, Kim and Seo admitted they had taken the backpack as no one was watching it.
They then used the cash to gamble at the casino of a hotel on Vo Nguyen Giap Street in Ngu Hanh Son District but eventually lost all of the money.
