Ho Chi Minh City has announced plans to achieve citywide 5G network coverage in 2025, a key objective for the Centrer for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (C4IR).
On December 22, city leaders met with the C4IR management board, founding members, and network participants.
During the meeting, Nguyen Van Nen, secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, commended the center's role in meeting the city’s development needs.
"You have built an organization that aligns with the city's growth ambitions," Nen stated, then expressing gratitude to the founding members, management board, and other contributors.
Phan Van Mai, chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, echoed these sentiments, pledging that the city would allocate sufficient resources to ensure the center operates effectively from the outset.
He also urged the center to quickly build its workforce and commence planned activities without delay.
"I encourage everyone to closely monitor the center’s operations, especially during this critical initial phase," he stated. "The People's Committee will direct departments and agencies to provide close coordination in supporting the center's initiatives and in achieving its outcomes."
Vo Van Hoan, vice-chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee and chairman of the C4IR management board, highlighted the center's collaboration with experts from the World Economic Forum (WEF).
This partnership aims to leverage expertise from the global C4IR network and partners to draft its inaugural Policy Report, which will focus on how Vietnam can actively engage in the Fourth Industrial Revolution and strengthen its position in the global value chain.
"For 2025, the center has identified nearly 20 major initiatives," Hoan noted. "These include a strategy to achieve comprehensive 5G coverage for the city, led by Viettel Group, and the training of 1,000 high-quality engineers specializing in AI and semiconductors."
At the meeting, members of the management board, founding members, and network participants discussed upcoming schemes, including plans to supply high-quality human resources in technology and innovation, the application of AI to air transportation, and the development of a semiconductor ecosystem.
They also reviewed strategies for achieving green and sustainable growth, promoting green finance, and ensuring comprehensive 5G network coverage next year.
A foundation for national development
Since its opening in September, C4IR has rapidly developed foundational infrastructure, operational frameworks, and strategic plans.
This groundwork is intended to enable the center to fulfill its mission of driving socio-economic development, not only for Ho Chi Minh City but also on a national scale.
The center operates under the close oversight of the prime minister.
C4IR was established based on a memorandum of understanding between the government of Vietnam and WEF for the 2023–26 period, along with a cooperation agreement between the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee and the forum.
Its mission is to spearhead Vietnam's transition to a high-value economy driven by science, technology, innovation, and green and digital transformation.
The center also collaborates with the global C4IR network to propose solutions, policy recommendations, and research in breakthrough fields, aligning with national priorities and international trends.
By mobilizing resources and supporting the government and businesses in adopting emerging technologies, the center aims to position Vietnam as a leading participant in the Fourth Industrial Revolution, paving the way for sustainable and inclusive economic development.
