North-central Vietnamese province releases endangered sea turtle into ocean

The Roon Border Checkpoint in the north-central Vietnamese province of Quang Binh joined hands with local fishermen to release a green sea turtle back into the ocean on Tuesday.
The turtle had been trapped in a fishing net owned by 43-year-old local Le Nam, who voluntarily handed it over to officials at the Roon Border Checkpoint.
The officials then helped examine the turtle for injuries before releasing it back into the ocean.
It is a 120kg green sea turtle, according to local authorities.
Green sea turtles (Chelonia Mydas), also known as the green turtles, black (sea) turtles, and Pacific green turtles, are rare marine reptiles which have been categorized as ‘endangered’ by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
Local authorities thanked Nam for handing over the turtle and doing his part to protect both the animal and the marine environment, according to Nhan Dan (People) newspaper.
