Vietnam’s Ministry of Health logged 23,181 coronavirus patients across the country on Sunday, together with 12,210 recoveries and 202 fatalities.

The latest infections, including 28 imported and 15,751 domestic transmissions, were detected in 60 provinces and cities, the ministry said.

Binh Phuoc Province recorded 8,081 of the newest local cases, Hanoi 2,811, Hai Phong City 836, Khanh Hoa Province 790, Binh Dinh Province 636, Ha Giang Province 492, Ho Chi Minh City 472, Da Nang 433, Hung Yen Province 410, Quang Ninh Province 315, Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province 285, Thua Thien-Hue Province 255, Lam Dong Province 228, Hai Duong Province 175, Can Tho City 152, Quang Nam Province 126, Binh Duong Province 117, Dong Nai Province 95, and Binh Thuan Province 88.

Vietnam had detected 16,513 domestically-acquired infections on Saturday.

The Southeast Asian country has reported 1,893,570 community transmissions in all its 63 provinces and cities since the fourth virus wave erupted on April 27, 2021. A combined 1,497,431 of them have recovered from COVID-19.

Ho Chi Minh City is still the biggest epicenter with 507,810 patients, followed by Binh Duong Province with 291,446, Dong Nai Province with 98,745, Tay Ninh Province with 82,197, Hanoi with 67,978, Dong Thap Province with 45,665, Can Tho City with 42,790, Long An Province with 40,768, Khanh Hoa Province with 40,113, Tien Giang Province with 34,626, An Giang Province with 34,273, Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province with 27,585, Binh Thuan Province with 27,197, and Da Nang with 13,751.

Vietnam confirmed only 1,570 locally-transmitted infections in total in the previous three waves.

The health ministry announced 12,210 recovered patients on Sunday, elevating the total to 1,500,248.

The toll has climbed to 34,319 mortalities after the ministry logged 202 deaths on the same day, including 21 in An Giang Province, 19 in Ho Chi Minh City, 15 in Long An Province, 14 in Dong Thap Province, 14 in Vinh Long Province, 13 in Kien Giang Province, 11 in Soc Trang Province, 11 in Can Tho City, and the remainder in 20 other provinces and cities.  

Vietnam has recorded 1,859,841 patients, including 30 imported Omicron infections, since the COVID-19 pandemic first hit the country in early 2020.

Health workers have given upwards of 160 million vaccine doses, including 865,962 shots on Saturday, since vaccination was rolled out nationwide on March 8, 2021.

Above 78.2 million of the country’s 98 million people have received at least one dose while over 70.9 million have been injected twice.

The number of third doses – including additional primary shots for immunocompromised people, boosters, and third jabs of Cuba’s Abdala vaccine – has topped 10.8 million.

Many provinces and cities are immunizing children aged 12-17 against COVID-19, using Pfizer-BioNTech shots.
