Police in Thai Binh Province, northern Vietnam have broken up an online gambling ring with transactions accumulating about VND6.6 trillion (US$287.5 million) from 2018 to 2022.

The provincial Department of Public Security confirmed on Monday that officers had apprehended 11 suspects aged 24 to 59 for gambling and organizing gambling.

Among them, seven reside in Hanoi, two are residents of Thai Binh Province, and two live in northern Bac Ninh Province.

Nguyen Thanh Tung, 43, a Hanoi resident, is the leader of the illegal racket.

The members operated their online gambling activities via the football betting website Bong88, whose server was located abroad.

Gamblers were each provided with a username and password to log onto the site and used points to place their bet.

Players’ accounts were divided into four ranks: super, master, agent, and member.

The value of one point depended on the account rank, with the highest value being VND50,000 ($2.1) per point.

Preliminary investigations show that the ring had processed transactions totaling about VND6.6 trillion from august 2018 to May 2022.
