Transport authorities in Vietnam’s southern Ho Chi Minh City have suggested a bus parking area be built near to Tan Son Nhat International Airport as a transit place for passengers traveling from and to the airfield.

This bus park is planned to seat on a 1,476-square-meter area in Gia Dinh Park in Go Vap District, about 1.3 kilometers from the airport in Tan Binh District, the Ho Chi Minh City Public Transport Management Center said in its recent proposal.

Such a bus transit point is necessary as the airport’s infrastructure has long been overloaded, failing to enable taxis and tech-based transport services to meet the travel demand of passengers to and from the airdrome, the center explained.

The proposed transit place will be able to serve as a flight check-in point for passengers, through the coordination between the airport authority and the center, contributing to relieve congestion at Tan Son Nhat, the center said.

Currently, there are only two bus lines operating at the airport, failing to meet the travel demand of increasing passenger numbers.

This proposal came after the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) previously sought permission from the city’s administration to build a parking lot of over 3,500 square meters, located in an area adjacent to the road to the international terminal, as a transit place for vehicles entering and leaving the airport.

In a recent dispatch to the municipal authorities, the Ministry of Transport also asked them to direct the city’s Department of Transport to coordinate with relevant units to arrange a transit place next to the airport for vehicles to park while waiting for passengers.

Such a plan will help avoid congestion of vehicles and passengers within the airport area, the ministry said.

After recent reports of Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper about the passengers finding it hard to pick up taxis, tech-based passenger cars or buses to leave the airport amid the chaotic traffic there, many transport experts have suggested prioritizing buses to serve passengers.

As the largest airport in Vietnam, Tan Son Nhat International Airport serves 840-850 flights with 130,000 passengers per day during peak times, according to the Vietnam Investment Review.
