A woman in northern Vietnam has welcomed rare identical triplet girls at a hospital in Hanoi.

The new mother, 22-year-old Dang Thi H., hailing from northern Hai Duong Province, was admitted to Hanoi Obstetrics & Gynecology Hospital in the Vietnamese capital city at her 37th week of pregnancy with triplets, also her first pregnancy.

In order to ensure the safety of both the mother and babies, doctors prescribed a cesarean section.

In turn, H. then gave birth to three healthy identical girls weighing 1.8kg, 1.9kg, and 2kg, respectively.

“This is an extremely rare case of triplets, with the woman three carrying natural fetuses with the same egg,” said Dr. Truong Minh Phuong at the hospital.

“The incidence of this is extremely low, about one in 200,000 births.”

The triplets were lucky to not suffer from complications such as blood transfusion between fetuses and fetal growth irregularity leading to disproportion between fetuses that can cause damage to all three fetuses during pregnancy, according to the doctor.

Phuong also recommends that pregnant women with multiple fetuses should have regular antenatal check-ups at specialized obstetrics facilities in order to detect and intervene possible complications early.
