The People’s Court of Bac Lieu Province in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta region on Thursday handed a 23-year prison sentence to a 62-year-old woman for raping and conducting lewd acts toward individuals below 16 years old.

Tran Thi Be Tu, 62, a resident of Dong Thap Province who had been temporarily staying in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province, was convicted of raping three childen, all of whom were below the age of 13, according to the Vietnam News Agency.

According to the indictment, Tu and her romantic partner, D.V.D., visited the residence of D.’s daughter in Phuoc Long District, Bac Lieu Province on May 1, 2022.

The next day, Tu carried out “different sexual acts” with T.T., a boy born in 2016, and V.N., a boy born in 2011. N. is one of D.’s children.

Tu also used a sex toy to carry out vaginal penetration on K.A., a girl born in 2012 who is the grandchild of D.’s ex-wife.

After raping her victims, Tu asked them not to disclose the incidents to anyone.

Prosecuting authorities determined that Tu’s conduct caused harm to the victims both physically and mentally.

The trial panel stated that Tu’s conduct constituted the offense of “raping an under-16-year-old person” as well as “lewd behavior toward an under-16-year-old person.”

Vietnamese law states that minors are people below 16.

The panel thus sentenced the defendant to 23 years behind bars.
