The Vietnamese Ministry of Construction has tasked localities with completing 134,890 social houses this year to reach the target of having one million units in 2021-30.
Ho Chi Minh City was assigned to develop 12,800 social houses, and Hanoi, 6,750 units.
Hai Phong City, Bac Giang Province, and Bac Ninh Province in the north will have to construct over 10,000 social houses each.
Meanwhile, Da Nang City in central Vietnam was asked to build 2,750 social houses; Dong Nai Province, a neighbor of Ho Chi Minh City, 9,100 units; neighboring Binh Duong Province, 6,600 units; and Can Tho City, 3,300 units.
The Ministry of Construction did not assign any social house development target to five provinces, including Ha Giang, Cao Bang, Bac Kan, Tuyen Quang, and Yen Bai, all in the northern region.
The government had earlier set a target to complete some 130,000 social houses this year, which was deemed unachievable as provincies and cities nationwide later registered to develop only around 47,000 social houses in 2024.
The Ministry of Construction said it would continue working with all provinces and cities to accelerate the building of social houses and housing for workers, as well as the upgrade of deteriorated apartment buildings.
The ministry will also coordinate with relevant ministries and agencies to remove hindrances to policies for social housing projects.
It will join hands with the State Bank of Vietnam to speed up the disbursement of a credit package worth VND120 trillion (US$4.9 billion) for developing social housing and upgrading old apartment buildings.
