Lam Hong Son, a 68-year-old Vietnamese national living in the U.S., has been proved innocent after 34 years of asking for justice.
The People’s Procuracies in An Giang and Long An Province, both in southern Vietnam, on Tuesday held a ceremony to make a public apology to Son.
Son was arrested twice, in 1990 and 1991, on charges of swindling, abusing trust to appropriate assets, and tax evasion.
At the ceremony, a representative of the People’s Procuracies and the police in An Giang and Long An Provinces said nothing could compensate for what Son had suffered from.
The ceremony was aimed at easing part of his losses and disadvantages.
Prosecution agencies of the two provinces took responsibility for their mistakes and considered them a lesson, the representative added.

Son said he accepted the prosecution agencies’ apology and expressed his confidence in the law.
He added that he had sent letters to assert his innocence to various agencies over the past 34 years.
He has asked the An Giang and Long An People’s Procuracies to compensate him over VND3.1 billion (US$121,720) and more than VND2.7 billion ($106,015), respectively.
The An Giang People’s Procuracy said it had appointed officials to deal with Son’s request.
