Authorities in Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City on Monday morning launched an operation against encroachments at the Ba Chieu Market area in Ward 1, confiscating a significant amount of goods and equipment from the encroachers.

At around 8:00 am on the day, a task force of the district’s Ward 1 began patrolling several streets adjacent to the market, including Trinh Hoai Duc, Bui Huu Nghia, Vu Tung, and Dien Hong to address the issue.

The force confiscated nearly 10 bags containing vegetables, fruits, root vegetables, market umbrellas, containers, as well as asked the encroachers to remove their umbrellas and stalls on the roads that impeded the flow of traffic.

Prior to this anti-encroachment drive, lots of market vendors and street hawkers were found to have occupied sidewalks and roadbeds around the market to sell their wares, causing traffic congestion in the area.

Tran Dang Khoa, chairman of the Ward 1 administration, said that the task force will make daily patrols to tackle encroachers to ensure public security and traffic safety there.

Over the past month, the ward’s authorities have tackled 25 cases of encroachment, with most of the encroachers pledging not to repeat their wrongdoings, Khoa added.

Aside from the Ba Chieu Market, Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper has been flooded with readers’ requests to help improve traffic flow along numerous streets where encroachments have been a long-standing issue for road users, such as Nguyen Huu Tho Street in District 7, the Nguyen Van Linh - Pham Hung Intersection and Le Van Luong Street in the outlying district of Binh Chanh, Nguyen Gia Tri Street in Binh Thanh District, Co Giang Street in District 1, and many others.

Tuoi Tre reporters later sent these requests to authorities of the respective areas as well as joined hands with them to combat encroachments.

Most of these roadways have been occupied by vendors of makeshift markets, street hawkers, and three wheelers for many years, thereby hindering the flow of traffic.
