Vietnam's Ministry of Transport has announced that Lien Khuong Airport in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong is now an international airport and began receiving international flights from Saturday.
Lien Khuong Airport, about 30km away from the provincial capital of Da Lat, currently has a capacity of two million passengers per year.
As per a decision signed by the transport minister, the airport will serve both regular and irregular domestic and international flights, private planes, military jets, and other aircraft.
Lien Khuong Airport, ranked 4D in accordance with the requirements set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), features a 3,250-meter-long runway designed to handle the Airbus A300, the Boeing B757, and equivalents.
Over the past several years, the ministry allowed Lien Khuong to operate many irregular international flights transporting tourists to the province despite it being a domestic airport.
According to a 2021-30 development plan for Lien Khuong Airport with a vision toward 2050 approved by the ministry in May, the airport is an international one and serves both civil and military purposes.
During the 2021-30 period, the airport is set to meet the requirements of the ICAO’s 4E category, and is expected to handle five million passengers and 20,000 metric tons of cargo annually.
By 2030, the airport will be capable of accommodating a range of aircraft, including the Airbus A320 and A321, the Boeing B747 and B787, the Airbus A350, and their equivalents.
Lien Khuong Airport is scheduled to serve seven million passengers and 30,000 metric tons of freight per year by 2050.
As planned, during the 2021-30 period, the runway of the airport will be kept unchanged in its size with a length of 3,250 meters and a width of 45 meters.
Meanwhile, by 2050, the runway will be lengthened to 3,600 meters.
By 2030, the airport will have more taxiways, while its aprons will be widened.
The T1 terminal with an annual capacity of two million passengers will be kept unchanged during the 2021-30 period, while the airport will open terminal T2 with a capacity of three million passengers a year.
By 2050, the T2 terminal will be expanded so that the airport’s total capacity can reach seven million passengers per year.
