Active thunder clouds caused intense rainfall in most parts of Ho Chi Minh City late on Wednesday afternoon, resulting in flooding, uprooting trees, and road traffic disruption across many streets.
Heavy downpours, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, lashed the outlying district of Binh Chanh, District 11, District 6, Thu Duc City, and several inner-city locales, according to the southern weather station.
The heavy rains made life tough for commuters as they struggled to wade through heavily-flooded streets at rush hour.
In Binh Thanh District, a 300-meter section of Ung Van Khiem Street, a notorious flooding hotspot, was submerged.
The lower half of the two-lane road, stretching from the Ung Van Khiem - Xo Viet Nghe Tinh Intersection to the Ung Van Khiem - Nguyen Gia Tri Intersection, became almost impassable due to severe inundation.
In Thu Duc City, heavy flooding hit Quoc Huong Street, causing many vehicle to break down.

Powerful winds and torrential rains also resulted in a large tree in Binh Thanh District’s Thanh Da Peninsula being uprooted and falling into a nearby house.
By 6:30 pm the same day, rainwater had yet to recede along several roads in Thu Duc’s Thao Dien Ward, a major expat enclave and a place where plenty of well-off Vietnamese are living.
Consequently, a host of motorcyclists had to wheel their broken-down vehicles through waterlogged streets.

Employees of Ho Chi Minh City Urban Drainage Company were dispatched to the flooded road sections where they removed trash from clogged manholes to help rainwater drain quickly.
The southern weather agency said that rain will continue to batter a vast area of southern Vietnam from Wednesday evening through Friday night, with precipitation of 60-90mm.
