Ho Chi Minh City is considering setting aside spaces on downtown streets along the first metro line and on Mai Chi Tho Boulevard for bicycle lanes, said director of the municipal Department of Transport Tran Quang Lam.
Lam assigned the Road Traffic Infrastructure Management Center to complete a plan to open bicycle lanes in the downtown area and along the first metro line.
The plan must include a map showing the connectivity between bicycle lanes and metro stations, urban areas along the metro route, tourist destinations, and trade centers.
There must be lane markings and traffic signs at intersections and pedestrian crossings to ensure safety.
The plan should be completed prior to July 30, and the Department of Transport will then consult relevant agencies on the plan and put the bicycle lanes into use this year.
Meanwhile, the Technical Infrastructure Management Center was tasked with studying solutions to arrange a bicycle lane on Mai Chi Tho Boulevard for use from this year.
The center must submit the solutions before July 30 as well.
Ho Chi Minh City is the first locality in Vietnam to launch the public bicycle rental service in 2021.
It set up 43 public bicycle rental stations with around 500 bicycles.
The city is expanding the model to all districts and Thu Duc City.
In May this year, the municipal Department of Transport announced an additional 80 eligible locations for the public bicycle rental service in District 1 and District 4.
