A 32-year-old man in Hanoi, who was declared brain-dead following a severe traffic accident, has become an organ donor, giving hope to patients in need of life-saving transplants.
After doctors confirmed the irreversible brain death of N.D.T., his family made the courageous decision to donate his organs.
Surgeons at Saint Paul General Hospital in Hanoi performed the procedures on Saturday, successfully removing his heart, liver, two kidneys, and corneas.
T.'s heart was swiftly transported in a medical storage box to Noi Bai International Airport, where it was flown to Ho Chi Minh City.
There, it was transplanted into a patient at the University Medical Center.
His kidneys were used to save two patients at Saint Paul General Hospital, while his liver was given to a recipient at Viet Duc Friendship Hospital in Hanoi.
His corneas were transplanted into a patient at 108 Military Central Hospital, also in the capital.
T., 32, had been taken to Saint Paul General Hospital on Thursday night in a deep coma, suffering from multiple severe injuries, including head trauma, after initially being treated at a local hospital.
Despite the efforts of medical staff, his condition deteriorated rapidly.
By early Friday morning, doctors conducted a clinical assessment and suspected brain death, which was later confirmed by leading experts after thorough examinations.
Faced with the devastating news, T.’s family chose to donate his organs, a decision hailed by medical professionals as an act of profound compassion.
Before the surgeries, dozens of doctors and medical staff held a moment of silence to honor T. and his sacrifice.
“This is a deed of great compassion and sacrifice, bringing new hope to patients who are waiting for an opportunity to receive an organ transplant,” a hospital representative stated.
The case reflects a growing trend in Vietnam, where organ donations from brain-dead individuals have been increasing.
According to the Voice of Vietnam, 13 such donations were recorded in the first half of 2024, matching the total number for all of 2023.
However, Vietnam continues to face a severe shortage of donated organs, with thousands of patients still on waiting lists, the Health & Life newspaper reported.
