The weather in Hanoi and other northern Vietnamese localities is forecasted to turn cool, with some mountainous areas experiencing lower temperatures as the first cold front of the year-end arrives, accompanied by some rain.
According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the cold front is moving into the northern region of Vietnam.
It is expected that from Saturday night to Sunday morning, this cold air mass will impact the northeastern region, followed by most of the northwestern region and some areas in the north-central region.
Winds will shift to the northeast inland.
On Sunday and Monday, the weather will turn cool in the northern region and the north-central province of Thanh Hoa, with some mountainous areas experiencing lower temperatures.
During this cold spell, the lowest temperatures in the north and Thanh Hoa Province are generally expected to range from 20-23 degrees Celsius, while mountainous areas may drop below 19 degrees Celsius.
The average temperature is projected to be 23-25 degrees Celsius, and below 22 degrees Celsius in mountainous regions.
In northern Cao Bang and Lang Son Provinces, the first areas to experience the cold air, the lowest temperatures are forecasted to be around 22-23 degrees Celsius on Sunday and Monday.
High mountainous areas such as Mau Son in Lang Son Province and Phja Oac in Cao Bang Province could see temperatures drop below 20 degrees Celsius.
In the northern province of Lao Cai, the lowest temperatures are expected to fall to 23-25 degrees Celsius, with high mountainous areas around 18-20 degrees Celsius, and Sa Pa Town possibly reaching 16-18 degrees Celsius.
In Hanoi, the lowest temperature over the next three days is forecast to be 24 degrees Celsius, while Hai Phong City and Quang Ninh Province may see lows of 22 degrees Celsius.
The meteorological agency also noted that from Friday night to Saturday morning, the north-central region will experience moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms, with localized very heavy rain such as rainfall amounts of 195 mm in Khe La area in north-central Nghe An Province, 111 mm in Chau Ly Commune in Nghe An Province, and 92 mm Cu Lay Lake in neighboring Ha Tinh Province.
Due to the cold air’s influence, from Saturday evening to Monday night, moderate to heavy rain, localized very heavy rain, and thunderstorms are expected in the northern region’s midlands and delta, Hoa Binh Province, north-central, and central regions, with common rainfall ranging from 50-150 mm, and potentially exceeding 200 mm in some areas.
On Saturday evening and night, the south-central, the Central Highlands, and southern regions may see scattered showers and thunderstorms, with rainfall amounts of 10-30 mm, and some areas receiving over 50 mm.
The agency warns of possible whirlwind, lightning, and strong gusts of wind during thunderstorms.
“Heavy rain and localized downpours can lead to flooding in low-lying urban areas and flash floods on small rivers and streams, as well as landslides on steep slopes,” it cautioned.
“Thunderstorms may also bring whirlwind, hail, and strong winds, impacting agriculture, damaging trees and houses, and affecting transportation and infrastructure.”
