Ho Chi Minh City and the southern region will see a brief break from the rain for one to two days before heavy downpours return later this week, according to the Southern Regional Hydrometeorological Center.

The center reported that winds in the south shift direction and operate with weak intensity on Tuesday, as a subtropical high pressure moves westward and lifts its axis slightly north, affecting the south-central and southern regions.

The weather in the southern region is mostly cloudy with some sunny intervals during the day, while showers and thunderstorms are expected in the afternoon and evening, bringing moderate to heavy rain to certain areas.

During thunderstorms, there is a risk of whirlwinds and lightning with temperatures reaching 31-33 degrees Celsius, and some areas exceeding 33 degrees Celsius.

In Ho Chi Minh City, Tuesday morning saw changing clouds and sunny weather, with an 8:00-am temperature of around 28 degrees Celsius and humidity at 89 percent, accompanied by an east-northeast wind.

Around Thursday and Friday, there is a possibility of an equatorial low-pressure trough formed around 5-9 degrees North latitude, which may gradually strengthen, alongside more active disturbances in the upper atmosphere.

This will lead to more widespread and intense rainy weather, with some regions seeing moderate to very heavy rainfall.

Additionally, due to the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) -- a recurring climate pattern involving changes in the temperature of waters in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean -- shift from El Niño to La Niña, overall rainfall is expected to rise.

In the Central Highlands and the south, peak rainfall from this month to November is projected to be 5-30 percent above the multi-year average.
