Four blind patients in different parts of Vietnam have restored partial vision thanks to corneas donated by two brain-dead organ donors, Hue Central Hospital, which performed these corneal transplants, announced last week.

On September 27, doctors from the hospital, located in Thua Thien-Hue Province, central Vietnam, went to Binh Dinh Province General Hospital in the south-central region to receive corneas from a 41-year-old brain-dead male donor.

The corneas were transplanted into two patients with impaired vision from the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai and Thua Thien-Hue. Both patients were receiving treatment at Hue Central Hospital.

On September 30, the hospital received another pair of donated corneas from a 36-year-old brain-dead patient at Nghe An Friendship General Hospital in north-central Vietnam.

The donated corneas were also transplanted into two more patients, one from Gia Lai and the other from Thua Thien-Hue.

The four recipients, who had endured blindness for a long time, expressed overwhelming joy of undergoing successful transplants and restoring partial sight.

They were discharged from the hospital on Friday last week.

Although the recovery process may take time and require further care, the dedicated efforts of the doctors have given the four patients hope for a full restoration of their eyesight.

All four patients expressed their deep gratitude to the two donors and their families for offering them the precious gift of sight.

“The donated corneas helped me get my sight back after years of darkness," one of the patients said.

“Words can’t fully express the depth of my gratitude."

Professor Pham Nhu Hiep, director of Hue Central Hospital, extended his heartfelt thanks on behalf of the hospital to the donors and their families for their noble act of organ donation.

Hiep also congratulated the four patients on their successful transplants and praised them for their meaningful decision to donate their own organs.

He explained that corneal transplants are currently the only option for patients with corneal injuries or disease when other treatments have failed.

However, the limited availability of donated corneas forces many patients to endure long waits before they can regain their vision.
