Three runners were hospitalized after fainting while participating in a night-time running event in Ho Chi Minh City a few days ago.
Dr. Vu Duc Nhan from Saigon General Hospital in District 1 told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Monday that the emergency department of the hospital had admitted the three, including two men, aged 38 and 46, and a 19-year-old girl, on Saturday night last week.
They were diagnosed with a blackout as they tried to complete their race at a night-time running race.
After receiving medical treatment, they became conscious.
Two of them were released, while the other remained in the hospital for heart check-ups, said the doctor.
Running events have become increasingly common in many areas, leading to incidents where some runners faint from exhaustion or, in extreme cases, lose their lives.
While running is a popular sport, Dr. Phan Vuong Huy Dong of the Ho Chi Minh City Sports Medicine Association explained that certain factors can put runners at risk despite its many benefits.
Ignoring their health limits, many participants with conditions like hypertension, heart disease, arthritis, and diabetes attempted to complete the race, significantly increasing their risk of fatality.
Evening or early morning runs may pose even greater dangers for those with weaker health.
Dr. Dong recommended that organizers of running events classify races properly and ensure the presence of medical teams to provide timely care, guaranteeing participants' safety.
Before joining a race, runners must be educated about their health limits and when they should stop if they feel ill.
Those with underlying conditions should visit a doctor for check-ups before taking part in a run.
