The Japanese government’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots and Human Security Projects (GGP) is believed to have significantly improved local living standards while fostering goodwill and positive sentiments among the Vietnamese people toward Japan, according to Japanese Consul General Ono Masuo.
Masuo made the remarks while signing a new grant agreement with the deputy chairman of the Krong Pac District People's Committee Y Djoang Nie at the Japanese Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City on Tuesday.
This grant agreement will cover classroom construction and teaching equipment provision for Y Jut Elementary School in Ea Kenh Commune of Krong Pac District, Dak Lak Province in the Central Highlands of Vietnam.
Valued at US$86,842, the project involves constructing a two-story building with four classrooms and equipping the classrooms with teaching equipment.
Consul General Masuo believed that the grassroots grant aid projects, although small in scale, have widespread implementation across many localities and help strengthen the friendship between Japan and Vietnam.
“These efforts foster closer and more effective cooperation between the governments of Japan and Vietnam, especially in the context of the rapidly changing geopolitical challenges faced by both countries,” he said.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, the representative of Krong Pac District was committed to the strict management of the project, ensuring regular maintenance and repairs to guarantee its long-term effectiveness.
From 1995 to 2023, under the GGP, the Japanese government aided 226 projects in 26 southern provinces and cities of Vietnam, with a total value exceeding $18 million.
The aid projects primarily focus on education, healthcare, agriculture, and rural infrastructure, such as bridges and roads, directly addressing the daily needs of local communities.
According to the diplomat, these projects have further strengthened the bond between the Vietnamese and Japanese people, forming a solid foundation for the two countries to upgrade their relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2023.
