Three Vietnamese players scored as Vietnam defeated Malaysia 3-0 in their Group B fixture at the 2022 AFF Championship on Tuesday evening in Hanoi, where each of the teams received a red card.

A total of three yellow cards and two reds were shown by the referee throughout the encounter at My Dinh National Stadium in the Vietnamese capital.

The game was quite even in the first 15 minutes before Vietnam’s harmonious crosses on the left flank disconcerted the Malaysians.

In the 28th minute, from captain Do Hung Dung’s corner kick, Nguyen Tien Linh scored the opening goal with a header that hit the ground and bounced into the top corner of the Malaysian goal.

But five minutes later, the hosts were down to 10 men after Nguyen Van Toan received his second yellow card.

Despite a numerical disadvantage on the pitch, Vietnam still had some dangerous attacks and put pressure on the opponents after the break.

One of those efforts saw Malaysia’s Azam Azmi foul Doan Van Hau in the 60th minute.

The referee consulted his assistant before giving Azmi a straight red card and awarding a penalty to Vietnam.

Que Ngoc Hai stepped up and shot the ball into the right corner to double the lead for the hosts.

Vietnam’s third goal came in the 83th minute when Nguyen Quang Hai immediately made an impact after being subbed in with a no-look pass that tore up Malaysia’s defense, enabling Nguyen Hoang Duc to face goalkeeper Ahmad Syihan Hazmi.

Duc's remaining job was just chipping the ball over the Malaysian custodian.

The remainder was not enough for Malaysia to find a goal and the game ended 3-0 in Vietnam's favor.

The hosts climbed to the top spot of Group B after their second successive victory in the tournament, while Malaysia descended to the second place.

Singapore, who beat Laos 2-0 in another game earlier on the same day, rank third.

Myanmar and Laos place fourth and fifth, respectively.

In Group A, Thailand sit atop the table, followed by Indonesia, Cambodia, the Philippines, and Brunei.

The group phase of the 2022 AFF Cup will continue until January 3 with group winners and runners-up advancing to the semifinals, which will be played on January 6 and 9 on a home-and-away basis.

The final will be held over two legs on January 13 and 16.
