Authorities in Ho Chi Minh City have set a target of launching waterway tourism products on all rivers in the city by 2025, eyeing US$12.6 million in revenue until next year.

The city will tap the Saigon, Nha Be, Soai Rap, and Long Tau Rivers, and others connecting the city with Dong Nai, Binh Duong, Tien Giang, Long An and Ben Tre Provinces for tourism, according to a waterway tourism development plan in the 2023-25 period recently issued by the municipal People’s Committee.

Many inner-city canals will also be factored into the plan.

The city will roll out at least 10 waterway tourism programs to serve residents and tourists by 2025.

The city is striving to welcome some 500,000 tourists arriving by ship annually in 2023 and 2024.

The number is expected to increase 10 percent a year in the following years.

The municipal administration aims for VND300 billion (US$12.6 million) in annual revenue from waterway tourism in 2023 and 2024.

The earnings are targeted at improving 10 percent per annum in the following years.

In the first two years of implementing the plan, the city expects to receive some 100,000 international cruise guests annually.

The international tourist arrivals by cruise ship are projected to grow by 12-15 percent in the following years.

The municipal administration is enhancing efforts to develop waterway tourism into the city’s tourism uniqueness by 2030, contributing to diversifying tourism services and products.

By 2050, the city will have had 200 speedboats and 100 ships and yachts to satisfy waterway passengers.

To fulfill its target, the People’s Committee told relevant agencies to focus on improving the quality of waterway tourism products, including river tours, in the 2023-24 period.

Apart from improving voice-over translation systems to provide tourists with information about the historical and cultural values of rivers and canals citywide, the municipal administration urged the relevant units to draw maps detailing waterway tourism routes.

The city will construct more wharves and launch new waterway tourism products in the 2024-25 period.

Ho Chi Minh City organized the first-ever river festival last week, luring crowds of domestic and international visitors.

The fest is expected to highlight the city’s tourism in the future.
