Have a nice Sunday!

Politics

-- Several Vietnamese intellectuals and diplomats have partaken in a Yale-hosted conference, which kicked off on Friday (US time), addressing conflicts in the East Vietnam Sea and featuring a display of tomes accentuating Vietnam’s sovereignty over the sea, Truong Sa (Spratly) and Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelagoes.

Society

-- Ho Chi Minh City needs nearly VND1.3 trillion (US$57.5 million)    as part of VND2.008 trillion ($88.8 million) meant for its anti-flooding efforts, according to the city's Anti-Flooding Program Operating Center.

-- Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper reporters on Saturday joined professional divers scouring the sea floor in Bo Trach District in the north-central province of Quang Binh, which has been rumored to become a dead sea with fish carcasses piling up over recent days. The video clips recorded during the dive failed to spot layers of dead fish as rumored but revealed desolate waters with limited living fish or signs of vibrant sea life.    -- More than 17 metric tons of mature fish raised in floating cages along the Buoi River in Thach Thanh District, located in the north-central province of Thanh Hoa, have died en masse over recent days. Representatives of a sugar factory in the vicinity admitted on Saturday that they had discharged unprocessed wastewater into the river, which is allegedly linked to the mass fish deaths.

-- Police in District 8, Ho Chi Minh City confirmed on Saturday that they are looking into the death of a 25-year-old scrap dealer, who died of brain trauma after being hit repeatedly with stones by a gang on the street on Friday night.

Business

-- Experts have proposed that to cut traffic toll competent agencies should eliminate investors making high-interest bank loans which have inflated the toll.

-- Many Tuoi Tre readers have recently voiced their grievances over local peddlers’ and tour operators’ rips-off and soliciting tourists into buying their items and services at UNESCO-recognized Hoi An Ancient Town, a beloved attraction in the central province of Quang Nam. -- The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam has proposed that international aviation technology experts and plane producers consider allowing passengers to make phone calls mid-flight at certain times.
