Da Nang International Airport’s new terminal will have a roof design that takes inspiration from the wings of a seagull, it was revealed as the first sod was turned on the multimillion-dollar project on Sunday.

The new terminal, set to solely serve international flights, is located next to the current terminal at Da Nang City’s airport, the largest of its kind in central Vietnam.

The project also includes construction of a new flyover and parking lot, with a total investment of more than VND3.5 trillion (US$155 million), the developer, AHT Co., said at the groundbreaking ceremony.

The new terminal has a design capacity of four million passengers a year and can be increased to six million passengers per year by 2030.

The roof of the new terminal will be shaped like the outspread wings of a seagull, symbolizing the dynamic city that fronts the East Vietnam Sea.

The new venue will be equipped with 40 check-in counters, 42 immigration counters, and ten boarding gates.

Construction is expected to be completed in 16 months and the terminal is slated to go into trial by March 2017.

The new terminal is built as part of preparations for Da Nang to host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in October 2017.

The current terminal at the Da Nang airport will solely serve domestic flights following the opening of the new international one.

The Da Nang International Airport was inaugurated in late 2011 with a capacity of six million passengers a year.

Last year the airport handled five million passengers and the new terminal will therefore help prevent it from becoming overloaded.
