The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) will add 26 landing and take-off slots every day at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City during the upcoming holidays, Reunification Day (April 30) and International Labor Day (May 1), and the peak summer travel season, enabling local airlines to offer an additional 5,000 air tickets daily.
The increase is aimed at meeting the higher demand of air passengers, the CAAV said on Thursday afternoon.
The authority worked with local airlines, and flight and air traffic management service providers to discuss the hike in landing and take-off slots.
Given the soaring travel demand of air passengers and the capacity of local air carriers and service suppliers, the CAAV decided to revise the number of slots up to 26 a day, starting from April 28 to May 3, and from June 1 to August 15 in the peak 2023 summer travel season.
Following the slot spike, some 4,500-5,000 air tickets will be launched daily during the two periods.
The CAAV asked local airlines to minimize flight delays, while aviation service suppliers were told to map out detailed plans to serve flights during the peak travel periods.
In addition, the authority has strengthened control over ticket pricing, requesting airlines to sell tickets at their registered prices.
To guarantee the benefit of air passengers, the CAAV required air carriers to publicize airfares and impose sanctions on their authorized outlets which sell tickets for domestic flights at a higher price than the ceiling level.
Statistics from the CAAV indicated that Tan Son Nhat International Airport handled 20,975 flights and over 3.1 million passengers during the 2023 Lunar New Year (Tet) holiday, from January 1 to 31, up 26.5 percent and 61 percent, respectively, year on year.
In 2022, 34 million passengers passed through the airport in Ho Chi Minh City, local media reported.
