Vietnam's Power Generation Corporation 2, or EVNGENCO2, and its Chinese business partner China Southern Power Grid Company (CSGI) proposed developing a 500MW pumped storage hydropower plant in Quang Tri Province, central Vietnam during their recent working session with the provincial administration.

Under their proposal, the plant would be built at an irrigation dam of the Quang Tri hydropower plant in Huong Hoa District over a course of some seven years and be put into operation after 2030.

The project would use water from the irrigation dam to generate electricity with a capacity of 500MW to be supplied to the national grid at peak hours, while pumping water from a lower reservoir to an upper one for storage at off-peak times, contributing to flattening the load curve.

Load curve flattening is a process wherein the load curve is flattened by reducing the peak load and transferring it to the low load section.

These companies said that the project would satisfy the growing need for electricity and highlighted the feasibility of the project in terms of economic benefits.

The project development and operation would provide employment for a large number of local residents and thereby would help improve their incomes.

Also, it would make contributions to the local budget, they elaborated.

Le Quoc Vu, vice general director at EVNGENCO2, asked its subordinate agencies to work with the province to add the project to the National Power Development Plan VIII.

Ha Sy Dong, vice-chairman of the provincial administration, said Quang Tri boasts potential for developing renewable energy, citing examples of some renewable power projects that had commenced operations in the province.

The vice-chairman endorsed the proposal to build a pumped storage hydropower plant in the province and asked CSGI to team up with the relevant units to facilitate further steps.

The province pledged support for the investors during the project implementation, the official added.
