Vietnam purchased more than 24,000 metric tons of Norwegian salmon in the first 10 months of 2024, making it one of Norway’s largest seafood markets in Southeast Asia.

Åshild Nakken, regional director for Southeast Asia at the Norwegian Seafood Council, revealed the figures during a strategic partnership signing event between the council and restaurant chain operator Golden Gate Group in Ho Chi Minh City on Wednesday.

She said that Vietnam remains a key market for Norwegian seafood, with major products including salmon, brown crabs, and king crabs.

Of the 24,000 metric tons of Norwegian salmon imported into the Southeast Asian country, frozen salmon, particularly salmon belly cuts used for sushi, saw strong demand alongside fresh salmon.

Vietnam consumed around 350 metric tons of brown and king crabs during the 10-month period, with Norway accounting for 54 percent of the supply.

Norway dominated Vietnam's brown crab market, holding a 76-percent market share.

Nakken emphasized Norway’s commitment to delivering high-quality, sustainable seafood products and strengthening partnerships with local Vietnamese stakeholders for long-term mutual benefits.
