A fashion collection titled “Condom fashion mix”, part of the campaign to normalize the use of condoms among youths, earned the Vietnam Guinness recognition as the largest one made from True – X condoms at a Nov 28 ceremony in Ho Chi Minh City.
The collection comprises of seven designs made from 25,000 True - X condoms. Unlike with the project’s two previous condom fashion collections, the designs this time are made from various mixtures of condoms and wrappers.
At the ceremony, held to commemorate World AIDS Day Dec 1, local model Tra My, the project’s representative this year, donned an “ao dai” (traditional Vietnamese long gown) and “non la” (traditional Vietnamese conical hats) made with over 4,000 condoms.
The combination, which is considered audacious and fascinating by many as condoms remain a sensitive object in Vietnam, also made a strong impression among international and local youths at the street show which took place on downtown streets including Pham Ngu Lao, Bui Vien and Dong Khoi earlier last month.
At the end of the ceremony, the models donned the condom dresses and wore motorbike helmets while participants were given a red rose and a condom each in accordance with the project’s message “Protect yourself”.
“I want to feature my condom designs in downtown HCMC streets so that people could see and touch the dresses themselves. This would better convey the project’s message in normalizing the use of condoms among locals,” shared Nguyen Minh Tuan, the project initiator.
Inspired by Tuan’s university dissertation, his “Condom Project” kicked off in 2011. During the two following years, the project organizers had produced two designs made with 700 and 2,000 condoms, which were donned by local celebs, including transgender singer Huong Giang Idol.
