A Vietnamese designer showcased his newest collection at the New York Fashion Week (NYFW), one of the ‘Big Four’ fashion weeks in the world, on February 11 (EST), becoming the first haute couturier of his country to have such an honor.

Nguyen Cong Tri impressed the world with his fall/winter haute couture collection named “Cuoc dao choi cua nhung vi sao,” literally translated as "The walk of the stars," for which he worked with one of the most renowned stylists of New York.

The 15-minute show consisted of 42 ball gown dresses most suitable for red-carpet events, a common theme for many designers at NYFW.

Having cooperated with Kate Young, one of the ten most powerful stylists of Hollywood, the haute couture dresses designed by Tri all boast modern and trendy looks that many global celebrities are currently searching for.

“For me, women are like shining stars in someone else’s heart,” the Vietnamese designer said of the source of inspiration for his newest collection.

“I like women in ball gowns because they shine like stars on the red carpet.”

Tri, chief designer of his brand CONG TRI, took advantage of the NYFW to introduce to the world a collection of traditional costumes with familiar styles such as mermaid dresses, tutus, and off-shoulder dresses.

Regarding the materials, Tri chose the most luxurious ones in America, complete with Vietnam’s high-quality traditional fabrics such as Lanh My A silk, one of the most distinct Vietnamese silk types.

Other materials commonly seen at Tri’s 2019 fall collection were organza, brocade, and satin silk.

Not only was the designer able to make costumes that suit the styles and preferences of world celebrities, but he also succeeded in introducing Lanh My A silk to the world high-fashion industry at the NYFW.

During Monday's show, many renowned models walked down the runway in sculptural 3D dresses typical of the 1980s, stunning the viewers with the dresses decorated with glittering and shiny embroidery.

Tri also used several draping techniques to create huge bow ties and other shapes on his dresses.

In an international fashion event where creativity is appreciated, Tri’s newest collection “Cuoc dao choi cua nhung vi sao” was not only a surprising showcase of Vietnam’s most renowned designer but also a turning point for himself as well as the Vietnamese fashion industry.

On the collection, Tri was honored to work with Kate Young.

Young is one of the most in-demand stylists in Hollywood and fashion who had experience working with Dior, Chanel, Valentino, and Victoria’s Secret.

With difficulties posed by time zone difference, there were cases where the designer, hailing from the central Vietnamese city of Da Nang, and his colleagues had to attend phone meetings at late hours and on many occasions to adjust the outfits in a very short time.

However, thanks to experience gained from working with many internationally renowned figures including Rihanna, Gwen Stefani, and Katy Perry over the years, Tri’s team was familiar with adjusting schedules even if it meant working outside of business hours.

New York Fashion Week is one of the four most important fashion weeks in the world, collectively known as the “Big 4,” which also includes Paris, London, and Milan.

The semi-annual series of events is held in February and September, when international fashion collections are shown to buyers, the press, and the general public.

Nguyen Cong Tri is a self-taught fashion designer and a respected name in the Vietnamese fashion industry, as well as the world.

In 2014 he became the first Vietnamese member of the Asian Couture Federation, and many celebrities have worn pieces of his collections.
