Instead of only sending liaison and staff officers to partake in UN peacekeeping operations like the present, Vietnam will soon deploy field hospitals and military engineering units to such activities, Vietnamese State President Truong Tan Sang has said. President Sang made the new commitment while delivering a speech at the United Nations Peacekeeping Summit in New York on September 28 (New York time), as part of the ongoing 70th session of the UN General Assembly. Vietnam attended the summit as one of the countries that have contributed troops to UN peacekeeping operations since 2014, the president spoke at the event, which was co-chaired by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and U.S. President Barack Obama. According to the new commitment, Vietnam will soon dispatch level-two field hospitals and military engineering corps while continuing to deploy liaison and staff officers to UN peacekeeping operations, the Vietnam News Agency quoted President Sang as saying. The Vietnamese leader also highly valued the role of UN peacekeeping operations in preventing wars and conflicts in various locations in the world during the past 70 years. “The history of the Vietnamese nation has recorded resilient struggles of its people for peace, independence and freedom. We therefore sincerely wish that peoples around the world would be able to live in peace, development and happiness,” President Sang said. He also offered some suggestions that he believes will help UN peacekeeping operations be more successful and efficient in the coming time. He thanked the UN and other countries for assistance to Vietnam in its preparations for participating in UN peacekeeping operations, expressing his hope that such support will be maintained in the future. Besides the summit, President Sang on September 28 attended the Policy Dialogue on Vietnam-U.S. relations hosted by the Asia Society in New York, paid a working visit to the Associated Press, and met with French President Francois Hollande.
