Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has had the opportunity to meet with leaders of the two houses of the Russian parliament during his official visit to the European country that started on Monday.

The Vietnamese head of government joined talks with Valentina Matviyenko, chairwoman of the Federation Council, the upper house of Russia’s Federal Assembly, on Tuesday.

PM Phuc congratulated Moscow on its achievements in national development, highlighting the significant contribution of the Federation Council under the leadership of Chairwoman Matviyenko.

The premier also delivered an invitation to visit Vietnam in 2016 to the high-ranking official from her Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan.

The Russian parliament supports a comprehensive strategic partnership between Vietnam and Russia, and has approved, with consensus, many proposals of the Russian government to boost ties with the Southeast Asian country, Matviyenko said.

A number of members of the Federation Council have been very active in assisting Russian authorities and their local partners in carrying out their agreements with the Asian country, the chairwoman added.

Regarding the cooperation between Vietnam’s lawmaking National Assembly and Russia’s upper house, Matviyenko hoped that the two parties would continue cementing their collaboration, information exchange, and mutual sharing of experience in legislative activities.

The Russian official believed that all high-profile agreements signed during the Vietnamese premier’s visit would create new impetus for the comprehensive strategic partnership to become more effective.

Within the framework of his official visit, which will conclude on May 21, PM Phuc also met with Sergey Naryshkin, chairman of the State Duma, the lower house of the Russian parliament.

On behalf of Chairwoman Ngan, the Vietnamese head of government invited the Russia chairman to pay a visit to Vietnam in the near future.

He went on to congratulate the European nation on achieving significant results in stabilizing and developing its socio-economic status, and elevating national identity.

The State Duma has played an essential role in enhancing Vietnam-Russia ties, PM Phuc asserted, adding that Hanoi would always prioritize its cooperation with Moscow.

The two officials expressed their satisfaction with the positive results brought about by the relationship between the two nations, including growing political trust, more regular exchanges among elite officials and local councils, and effective collaboration in various fields.

This year will commemorate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the relationship between the two legislative bodies, which has been of great significance to the national development and growth of both countries.

PM Phuc suggested that the two nations’ parliaments continue to support each other at international arenas, maintaining the validity of international convention, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

The premier and the delegation of Vietnamese officials paid their tribute at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Moscow, and met with the Embassy of Vietnam.
