General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee and State President To Lam, his spouse, and a high-ranking Vietnamese delegation left China’s Guangdong Province for Beijing on Sunday evening, commencing their official activities in the Chinese capital.

Lam's ongoing state visit, taking place from August 18 to 20, is made at the invitation of General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and President of China Xi Jinping.

This marks his first official visit to China since assuming his posts as Vietnamese state president in May and Party leader earlier this month.

They were welcomed at Beijing Capital International Airport by Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs, and Minister of Foreign Affairs; Ambassador of China to Vietnam Xiong Bo; several high-ranking Chinese officials; a large number of Chinese citizens; staff from the Vietnamese Embassy in China; and Vietnamese citizens in China.

Later on the same day, Party General Secretary and State President To Lam, his spouse, and the high-ranking delegation visited the Vietnamese Embassy in Beijing where they met with its staff, representatives of the Vietnamese community, and Vietnamese students in China, the Vietnam News Agency reported.

He expressed hope that the embassy would enhance the effectiveness of existing cooperation mechanisms between the two countries, propose new mechanisms that align with international law and benefit both nations, strengthen bilateral relations, and encourage people-to-people exchanges.

He affirmed that the Vietnamese state is committed to providing all necessary support for overseas Vietnamese communities, including those living in China.

Lam is set to hold talks with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping on Monday, along with meetings with other key Chinese officials.

Earlier, General Secretary and State President To Lam and his spouse, along with their entourage, laid a wreath of flowers in honor of martyr Pham Hong Thai at his grave in the Huang Hua Gang Memorial Park and visited the relic site of the headquarters of the Vietnamese Revolutionary Youth League in Guangdong Province, after arriving in the provincial city of Guangzhou on Sunday.

The top Vietnamese official also had a meeting with Secretary of the Party Committee of Guangdong Huang Kunming and the provincial Party Committee’s Standing Committee in Guangzhou during the first day of his ongoing visit to the neighboring country.
