Politics -- President Truong Tan Sang had an eventful day in Myanmar yesterday, meeting with Speaker of the Upper House Khin Aung Myint and Speaker of the Lower House Thura Swe Mann, and attending the Vietnam-Myanmar Business Forum, where he affirmed that Vietnam will create favorable conditions for foreign investors, including those from Myanmar, to do business in the country. He also visited the Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam office and the Association of Vietnamese Business Investors in Myanmar.Society -- An earthquake measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale hit an area bordering both Nghe An and Ha Tinh Provinces, near the Vietnam-Laos border. The quake, with its epicenter was 10 km underground, occurred on the Rao Nay fault that runs from Laos to Ha Tinh. The intensity of quakes arisen from that fault can reach 6 degree, experts warn. -- Police in District 5, Ho Chi Minh City, are investigating a deadly robbery in which two robbers pushing a young woman and his boy friend into a canal near Vo Van Kiet Street after robbing a mobile phone from them. The woman was saved later while her friend died.
-- The Binh Phuoc Province Health Inspectorate yesterday fined Dai Hai Bao Co Ltd for providing contaminated food to more than 3,000 workers of FreeWell Company in Bac Dong Phu Industrial Park on November 8, causing food poisoning to these workers who had to be hospitalized for treatment. -- The Phu Quoc International Airport in Duong To Commune, Phu Quoc District, Kien Giang Province, will put into operation tomorrow, December 2, one day later than scheduled, said district authorities. At the same time, the current Phu Quoc Airport in the Duong Dong town will be shut down. An inaugural ceremony for the new airport will be held on December 15. -- Khanh Hoa Province will be developed to become a centrally-run city in the future, according to a project to develop the province by 2020 on which the Politburo and the provincial Party Committee discussed in a meeting in Hanoi yesterday. Accordingly, a practical and feasible roadmap for Khanh Hoa’s development will be outlined soon.Business -- Vietnam and Myanmar will strive to push two-way trade turnover over the US$500 million target, President Truong Tan Sang made the remark at the Myanmar-Vietnam business forum on November 30. President Sang witnessed the signing of several investment cooperation contracts and agreements between Vietnamese and Myanmar businesses at the forum. Myanmar businesses praised the Vietnamese market’s potential and expressed a desire to seek investment opportunities and closely collaborate with Vietnamese partners. -- Gas suppliers in Ho Chi Minh City said they have reduced the retail price of LPG by VND12,000 per cylinder of 12 kg from today, December 1. Accordingly, the retail price now is VND420,000-430,000 (US$20.6) per cylinder. The reduction was made as the imported gas price has declined by US$40 per ton, suppliers said.Lifestyle -- Vietnamese singer My Tam won the Best Asian Artist prize at the 2012 Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) in Hong Kong yesterday. MAMA is one of the major K-pop music award ceremonies being held annually in South Korea, involving the participation of some of the most well-known actors and idols, by Mnet Media. MAMA began to be held outside Korea in 2010.Sports -- Ten-man Thailand ushered Vietnam out of the AFF Suzuki Cup on Friday, two goals from stand-in striker Kirati Keawsombut setting up a 3-1 victory that saw the three-time champions top Group A on nine points. Thailand will play the second-placed team in Group B in the semi-finals with the Philippines, who took second spot after beating Myanmar 2-0 in the simultaneous kick off, meeting the group winners.
