A 54-year-old man in northern Vietnam died after lightning struck him and his wife when they were at home on Thursday.
Yesterday’s heartbreaking incident occurred amid heavy rain and thunderstorms in the afternoon, when the man, Ho Van Son, and his 49-year-old wife, Ho Thi Miec, were sitting in their house in mountainous A Doi Commune in Huong Hoa District of Quang Tri Province, local authorities said.
The couple had returned home from their farming work as they saw the weather turn bad, local residents said.
The lightning killed the man on the spot and seriously injured the woman, who was taken by neighbors to the commune’s health center for emergency aid.
After receiving treatment and care, Miec recovered the same day.
4 struck by lightning, 2 die
On Wednesday, two young men were also struck dead by lightning in southern Kien Giang Province.
Phan Van Ket, 25, 27-year-old Nguyen Hoang Anh, and two other young men were playing football on a field in Go Quao District when lightning hit them at 5:20 pm, according to local authorities.
Ket and Anh died right away, while the other two – Ngo Van Vu and Huynh Van Cho – picked up serious injuries and were taken to Kien Giang General Hospital for treatment.
Vu has survived the occurrence but Cho was in a critical condition, doctors said yesterday.
As it is now in the seasonal transition from spring to summer in Vietnam, lightning can strike at any time, especially before rain and in open areas, Bui Xuan Khanh, director of the Kien Giang Hydro-Meteorological Center, warned.
