Vietnam’s Ministry of Health recorded 28 community-based coronavirus patients on Wednesday, the majority related to two provinces in the northern part of the country.

Sixteen of the new infections were confirmed in Hai Duong, five in Gia Lai, four in Quang Ninh, two in Binh Duong, and one in Hanoi.

Vietnam reported the first two domestic infections on January 28, having spent nearly two months detecting no community transmission.

A total of 329 local cases have been found since then, according to the health ministry’s data.

Two hundred and forty patients were logged in Hai Duong, 42 in Quang Ninh, 21 in Hanoi, 14 in Gia Lai, three in Bac Ninh, two in Hoa Binh, four in Binh Duong and one each in Ho Chi Minh City, Hai Phong, and Bac Giang.

Most of the domestically-transmitted infections were linked to Hai Duong and Quang Ninh, both located in northern Vietnam.

Health officials have conducted aggressive contact tracing as well as targeted testing and lockdowns since the new wave blindsided the country.

The health ministry announced one imported case on Wednesday, a 25-year-old Vietnamese who was quarantined upon arrival in Vietnam from Japan on Monday.

He tested positive for the virus on Tuesday.

The patient is being isolated for treatment in Quang Nam Province, located in central Vietnam.

Vietnam is sealing its borders to all international arrivals but it still grants entry to skilled workers, experts, diplomats, and Vietnamese repatriates, who are all subject to mandatory quarantine upon arrival.

The Southeast Asian country has documented 1,911 coronavirus patients as of Wednesday night, with 1,461 recoveries and virus-related 35 deaths, according to the Ministry of Health.

It confirmed 84 local transmissions on Thursday, 62 on Friday, 61 on Saturday, 31 on Sunday, 32 on Monday, and 31 on Tuesday.

Vietnam is quarantining nearly 49,000 people who either came into close contact with infected patients or entered the country from pathogen-struck regions.
